My Detroit Story is an online book that includes nearly four hours of
video, an estimated 3,500 photos and over one hundred web pages. Its
design creates a free flowing tale seen through the eyes of one of
Detroit’s most notable names, Jerry Schoenith.
The book began as the true story of Twins Born On The Fourth Of
July. It tells the story about Tom and Jerry identical twins born on
July 4, 1943 to Millie and Joe Schoenith from Detroit, MI. Jerry
decided after more than a year of compiling information, not to
include his twin brother Tom because his life-style is so tedious.
Jerry believes his adventures would relate to a larger demographics
segment of metro-Detroiters.
Jerry Schoenith is best known for his tenure at the Roostertail
Entertainment Complex during the 60's and 70's. The club is located
on the Detroit River's famous Gold Cup racecourse.Throughout the
years he brought to the riverfront Las Vegas superstars such as Tony
Bennett, Bobby Darin, Marvin Gaye, Wayne Newton, Frankie Vallie
and the Four Seasons, Diane Ross, Stevie Wonder, George Carlin,
and Danny Thomas. The Roostertail was opened by his father, Joe on
June 12, 1958. After fifty years the Roostertail is still in the family.
Through the 70's Jerry help some of Michigan's' top restaurant
designers to create Jerry's Marine Bar, the Palm River Club and the
Mud Hut. They were located on various floors inside the complex. In
their own unique way the trio of eateries became Michigan's first
theme restaurants.
Jerry's promotion career began behind the wheel of his father's power
boats, the Gale V. In 1964 Jerry became the youngest unlimited
hydroplane “Rookie Driver of the Year”. The following seasons he
drove Gale's Roostertail U-44 to wins in the President's Cup
Invitational, Washington D.C., the Mayor's Trophy Race Seattle,
Seafair and insight of five hundred thousand Detroit race fans the
Horace E. Dodge Memorial Regatta.
He raced successfully for five seasons before a near death experience
on the Detroit River forced him to retire as a driver. Hanging up his
driving suit did allow him to devote full-time to promotion and
management of the Roostertail Entertainment Complex.
After nearly twenty years, Jerry decided to leave the Roostertail and
offer his expertise to others. He formed JSEI (Jerry Schoenith
Enterprises Incorporated) in 1980. His company's first client was the
Unlimited Racing Commission (URC). Jerry became unlimited
hydroplane racing first paid national executor director in charges of
the promotion and marketing for the ten race World Championship.
In 1982 Jerry formed his own race team. Nearly twenty years after he
started driving his French auto manufacture sponsored Miss Renault
elf won the 1983 American Power Boat Association unlimited
hydroplane UIM World Championship title. Jerry made a bet at the
christening of his new unlimited hydroplane that if his team won the
biggest title in racing, the World Championship he world buy them a
car. As usually Jerry came through. He presented his driver and crew
with their pick of a new Renault sports car or Jeep Cherokee. This
$100,000 bet is one he was glad to pay off.
In 1987, he secured his place in racing history after forming the
Unlimited Automotive Thunderboat Association. The new
sanctioning organization was the first unlimited body that APBA
authorized in its 100 year history. It featured Unlimited style
specifications with no-holds bar automotive powered engines.
Using all his marketing tricks he's learned thought the past three
decades Jerry once again dove into something he new little bit about,
the pet show business. During the 1990's Schoenith produced six
Michigan Family Pet Shows. One of his biggest shows featured nearly
4000 pets and animals, more than 500 pet products' booths
encompassing all of the 167 acres of the Michigan State Fair Grounds.
One show featured much of the above, however for an extra thrill
showgoers were treated to a full-blown Circus.
After a year off recovering from a complete left hip replacement, he
began his long talked about book. The first of two proposed titles
were "What Time Does the Midnight Show Start" or "Twins Born on
the Fourth of July". However, he decided on "My Detroit Story" when
the on-line book became more about his birth city than his history
growing up in Detroit.
In the beginng Jerry had to teach himself the ins and outs of running
computers. In addition to brushing up on his writing skills, and
learning to type he had to master PowerPoint presentations. Next
came the hard part, gaining the knowledge to create a web site in
addition to publishing one.
To be continued.
